Music Together® - Mixed Age
Class designed for children birth through age 5, fostering developmentally apprioriate, family-style learning. Adults and children participate at their own level by singing, moving, chanting, listening, and exploring musical instruments. Class meets for 45 minutes once a week for 9 weeks in the Fall, Winter, and Spring and 4 weeks in the Summer. Infants 9 months and younger come free with a registered sibling. Song collections change each session.
The mixed-age format is not only educationally sound, but creates a family-like atmosphere where siblings can attend class together. Older children learn from being in a leadership role, while younger children benefit from the example of he older child. Children of the same age are not necessarily in the same stage of music development. A mixed-age format enables them to participate freely and experience the music at their own level of complexity, without being burdened by age-specific expectations.
Rhythm Kids®
We are offering a Big Kids Class ages 4 to 7 for our older children. This class is age appropriate and designed with more mature and complex beats, singing, dancing, instrument play and movement activities along with our theme weeks. We are currently offering two Rhythm Kids® workshops this summer and will be offering a 9 week class in the Fall. This is an optional Drop-off Class for parents. Children must have reached their 4th birthday by the time of the first class.
Babies Only Class
The Music Together Babies class, for families with infants from birth through eight months, is a one-semester introduction to Music Together and to early childhood music development. After this one semester, the family enrolls in a mixed-age class. The music activities in a Babies class are specifically designed to teach parents how to support music development in infancy and how to connect with their infants through music, using concepts like “purposeful touch,” “sound layering,” and “dancing for baby.” Babies classes use the same collection as mixed-age classes, enabling a seamless transition for families and teachers between class programs.
Generations Class
In Music Together Generations classes, teachers and families foster meaningful musical relationships across the ages, as “Musical Grandfriends” join the music-making circle. Expanding the class community in this way enriches the experience for families and makes these classes some of the most satisfying to teach.
Classes are typically held in residential facilities, such as independent living, assisted living, or nursing homes, or in day programs where Elders are invited, but never pressured, to participate in class, with the support of an on-site staff member, and are respected as important music models.
Regardless of age, spirits are lifted, learning across multiple domains is stimulated, and meaningful connections are made. Children and families, especially those without extended family nearby, discover the value of intergenerational relationships and become more comfortable engaging with older adults. Elder participants enjoy witnessing children’s joyful music-making and find a sense of purpose in being a part of young children’s learning, which combats isolation and depression. The partner facility is grateful to be able to offer a cutting-edge, high-quality intergenerational program to its residents. Plus, teachers reach new levels of skill and enjoyment in their work.
